I want to add some apes (not sure what size yet) and a wrap around fender to my Fat Bob. I bought it with this intention...so now I want to get a game plan. Since I'm new to the HD world I need some guidance. Obviously, for the apes I would need extended brake lines, clutch lines, wiring, etc. Anything else? Will a SB wrap around rear fender work? It was made to clear a 160 rear tire...I have a 180. What else would I need for the fender swap?
As far as the bars, you're correct, wiring, throttle(s), clutch, brake line. IIRC, a 180 will fit a Street Bob, without much hassle. Youmay have to extend the wiring, if you plan on using the stock tail light holes, though.
Curious to see what apes will look like on a fattie. I'm not a bigape fan so I'm no guru on the subject.
As far as the tire goes, I had a thread going on the subject last week I think. Many will tell you a 180 will fit with no mods necessary. From what I can tell by looking under my fender, I see no reason why this can't be true. However, I talked to my dealer service manager about it and he said HD will not allow them to put a 180 on a dyna that is under warranty unless they install the "Screamin Eagle Dyna Wide Tire Kit" with it. My understanding is that that kit is nothing more than some braces inside the fender to prevent the wiring from getting rubbed by the wider tire. Not sure if that's absolutely true or not.
Yes a 180 will fit on a '06 and later Dyna without the SE "wide tire kit". There have been many threads about this and I know it will because I have one. I have heard that some dealers won't install them without the kit, but I had Hogpro install mine and they gave me no hassle. I also brought the bike to my local dealer because my tube developed a slow leak and they didn't say anything about not having the kit when they replaced my tube. The rear fender is the one part of the Fat Bob that I truly dislike. I think a standard Dyna rear fender will look great on that bike. Post plenty of pics if you end up doing it. If you do Apes, make sure you get fat ones like 1 1/4". Those would look mean with the fat front end.
I sat on a fatbob this weekend at the dealer.
You are making some good changes. I left the dealer thinking
- the bars and arm position are awful
- the rear fender is hideous
- they put a 29 cent front brake line on a $15K bike.
Is the Fat Bob the only Dyna that has a stock 180 rear tire? WOW!
If a Dyna wrap around fender made for a 160 rear tire will fit around my 180...is the fender an easy swap? A one for one swap? Same fender struts (or whatever they are called)?
About the bars...definitely will go with 1 1/4". Just not sure on the rise yet. Speaking of which, dump the stock risers as well, correct?
You will also have to change out your rear fender struts as the ones for a standard dyna fender are completely different. You will also need to purchase a new tail light assembly, and most likely a new seat. I know my brothers solo seat from his Street Bob did not line up correctly on my bike and when I layed my seat up on his bike the contour was not right. You should also measure the diameter of the bars at the riser to get the correct bars that will fit your risers or you will also need to replace those.
I don't know what color your Fat Bob is but I happen to have a very slightly scratched Black Denim Street Bob fender for 75 not to mention a complete tail light assembly.Check it out in the classified section in a thread titled Christmas garage sale. And yes it will bolt right up on your Fat Bob.

I've already scoped that out there Special ED. My FB is black denim. I would like to see some closer pics of the scratches. Also, I wouldn't need to change out the fender struts? Do you know this for sure? And, where are you located?
