What are the reasons to install a tank lift, anything functional? More cooling to the engine?
What is involved with the installation?
Mostly cosmetic. Althought the kit advertised in J&P's catalog does tout the fact that it will improve cooling by allowing better air flow over the rocker covers - makes sense. It will also help you get to the top of the rocker covers to clean them. Right now, I can see dirt on mine but can't get to it to clean it off unless I loosen the tank.
To install, loosen the rear tank bolt but do not remove, remove the front tank bolt, install lower end of tank lift bracket to original mounting point on frame and reinstall tank to the top of the tank lift bracket, tighten rear bolt, and you're done. Oh, forgot the last step - take pix and post on hdforums.
You should sell 'em like Jackyl does with the lift kit, I'll take one.
I'll have to get some plaster-of-paris and make something like that for the wife's bike.
Sorry. Just don't get it. It naffs your fuel light up & gets you p'd off earlier each time, lessens bar clearance & stretches you lines underneath.
I reckon it's the Kings New Clothes all over again.
Now those Stiff Little Fingers...were'nt they a punk band back in the 80's?
I made mine at 1 1/4" and I've made 1 1/2" and 2" lifts. I went as low as possible to achieve the look without affecting the fuel gauge too much. I can take mine down to "E" and it takes 3.8 gallons to fill on a 4.8 gallon tank. I like how it opens up the top of the heads and gives you more of a stretched & raked look even though you didn't change the frame geometry. I think it gives you more air flow over the heads to help dissapate heat also. The fuel pump has a "sock" on the intake that lets it use all the fuel in the tank. You would lose a bit of capacity with the cross-over tube being raised but you shouldn't be pushing your luck that far anyway.
My bike definately looks better with a 2"tank lift installed. I have 3.5" straight risers with mini-apes over them. That combination of partsput mytop-clamp mounted speedo up real high in relation to my dash and tank. After some measuring and getting in touch with Jackyl, the 2" lift perfectly aligns the top ofmy dash and bar clamp. In effect .... I actually returned my dash/tank to normal by raising it roughlythe same amount I raised the risers.Beyond that,I thinkthe lifts make the majority of bikes they are installed on look better.
I have a 3" lift on my 06FXD. When the "low fuel" light comes on, I have approxiamately 100 miles left on a country ride. When I hit the big "E", I have approximately 65 miles left.
If I run her outa gas, it takes exactly 4.8 gallons to fill her up.............. Don't ask
I like the tank lift a lot, especially looking at the setup when I am sitting on the seat. I also think fillups are easier.
