quick question anyone work or know a lot about FORD trucks?
i need help with something i tried asking on the ford forum but there isnt anyone there. if so pm me
i think my steering gear box is going out and is causing my truck to shake when hitting a rut or uneven part of the road at slower speeds. i have noticed play increasing in the steering wheel and i noticed the tie rod ends are worn out. but im thinking that little bit of play is causing the wheels to shake along with my steering wheel and also when i press the brakes. my rotors and calipers are new. so theres no problem there. would you know how difficult it would be to change out the steering box.
if you have a solid front axel check your steering dampener... it looks like a shock on its side... mine used to go out all the time because of my big tires and it would do the same thing your describing.
What year is the truck? on the older (96- down) trucks the radius arm bushings will cause the wandering you describe, if the are worn. also if you have an older TTB equipped truck, check the I-beam pivot bushings. The newer trucks (97-up) are notorious for eating the lower balljoints, which could also be the cause. PM me with the specifics on the truck (year, model, 2 of 4wd) and I'll give you all the help i can. (my credentials in case you were wondering- ASE master auto tech, worked in dealerships for 10 years prior to joining the army. my specialty was suspension and alignments.) Ask away.
I have a 01 F-150 and shortly after I bought it (new) I got aletter from Ford saying that the outer tie rods MUST be inspected every oil change. I would think there has to be a problem with them or Ford would not have sent out such a letter.
You really need to give alot more info about your truck.. There are several types of "Ford trucks" out there and each concern or repair will be different. Some may have known issues with your problem.. You have some good resources here. We can give you just as good of info as the "ford" site you mentioned.. Guaranteed..
