I am looking at getting Vance and Hines Straight shot slip ons for my 08 Super Glide. Can someone please explain to me if I need the V&H Fuelpak, if there is another or better option or can I just have the stock ECU reset for the new exhaust?
If the ONLY modification you make is adding slip ons.....you do not have to remap. If you are going to do any other modifications (adding a free flowing air cleaner) you will need some sort of remap.
Yeah, I've read from a few people that you really don't need it. But I have a friend who's a tech and once he explained AFR (Air to Fuel Ratio) I went right to him and got the FuelPak set up. With the slip ons you effect the back pressure which can lean your fuel mixture, since all bikes come out lean from the factory you can burn your pistons over time. The call is yours, I had a qualified tech as a friend that took his own time and hooked me up, cost me a case of beer (after the mod of course) and I don't have to worry about it anymore.
The Factory Down Load Only covers the Screaming Eagle Slip On's with the OEM Screaming Eagle High Flow A/C. Not after Market Slip On's... And It's still EPA Lean... Have your Tech Buddy help you with a PCIII, SERT, or a Thunder Max, or a Fuel Pak...and have the bike tuned ! This is not the Area to cut corners for your bikes Longevity...
Option 2: If u want more sound + a little bit more power then go for slip ons + Screaming Eagle Air Kit + any of these(FuelPack, SERT, PC3, ThunderMax).
You will save more than 300$ if u go for option 1 coz u won't need SE air kit or FuelPack.
I'm running them and added a fuelpak shortly after putting them on. The straightshots run pretty open compared to some other slipons so I decided to play it safe. However, you'll want to run a high flow a/c if you add a fuelpak. Fuelpak does not supply codes compatible with running a stock air cleaner. I bought both the a/c and fuelpak from the same online source and installed them at the same time. You're bike will thank you in the long run.
I'll add that fuelpak, IMO, is sufficient for a simple stage 1 upgrade. However, if you intend to upgrade your motor more later on or want to finely tune your engine, pay extra and get a PCIII, SERT, or something else that is tunable. Fuelpak is what it is - you install it, set the codes, and ride. There is no adjustment unless they dictate it.
I would have to agree with 200fxdc.
I put on the VH slip-ons, the SE air filter and the VH fuel Pak.
This is tuned "system" and will get you good power, great fuel economy and will not lean your bike out.
I checked my plugs and they are very light tan - perfect after 10,000 miles.
