Default RE: retro front forks?

Hey guys. You can fill these forks through the top fork cap. Keep track of how much oil comes outand put that much back in. Some of these forks have had problems with cavitation and that is caused by not having enough oil in the fork tube. The cavitation will give you a soft ride in the front {kinda mushy}.To check for oil cavitation with the bike not running sit on the bike grab the front brakeand push and pull on handlebars to compress and extend fork tubes about a half dozen times and you will hear the oil squishing through the dampening tube, if thereis air being introduced after the 3rdor 4thpush or pull the tone will changethe squishing soundand then you will know it is cavitating. If you are experiencing this you can add 1 oz more fork oil then what you have drained out of the fork.

Fork cap = 40ft lbs
slider bolt = 15-18 ft lbs

If it’s like the old days, and I’m not saying it is, the forks hold a pre determined amount, not much to measure if you get all the old out.
However after talking to my bud and recollecting the bottom fill, I remembered with his help we only did that once, it worked fine but was more of a PITA than it was worth, I’ll just stick to top fill like ever body else.
I do appreciate the added info tho guys, its different from the side drains obviously.
And no Mud, I don’t have no stinkin manual
Manual? We don need no stinkin manual!
Just kidding, it’s on my wish list of soon to be mine stuff.
Im glad I started this thread tho, it gave me a lot of good info and I found out changing the fork oil aint gonna be no rocket science. I need to find out what fluid was put in to start with if I can so I can tell where I want to go, I just want to firm it up a tad.
On a related front end issue, my sevice dpt is gonna look at my neck and tree setup to see why its "chatering" when I use the front brake, I was gonna live with it till I saw some discusions here.
Thanks for the info and tips folks.
