Default Installing rear axle covers (removing axle?)

Just ordered a pair of rear axle nut covers for my bike. That part of the bike is super ugly if you ask me and it needs something, so I'll give these a shot. After I ordered them, I realized that there are brackets that mount to the axle, then the covers attach to the brackets. This means that I have to loosen and remove the axle to install these brackets. WTF?

So anyway, this sounds like a pain in the ***. I assume I need to jack the bike up, remove the axle and rear wheel, install everything, align the rear axle, etc...? F*ck all of that. Gosh damn I hate how everything's a pain in the **** with these things. P*sses me off.

Has anyone done this and is there any magical way this can be done with minimal effort? Highly unlikely...

Actually, it sounds like I don't have to take the axle off altogether, but I do have to loosen it for the brackets to be installed. So if I do that, I guess I can do it with the bike on the ground and I won't need to readjust anything when I tighten it back up?

not a big deal really
you got a bike stand ? I hope
support the bike on the frame to lift the rear wheel
remove the safety pin and nut on the axle, check for muffle clearance for the axle to be pulled
pay attention to the wheel spacers, slide out the axle
dont move the belt adjusters and you should be just fine
an extra guy to help with the brake and rotorwill help you alot on installing the wheel back in the swing arm

Nope, no bike stand. I'm not into doing anything but minor cosmetic things, so this is a pain in the @ss to me. Crap. Oh well, live and learn.

hey sgtthump, the way i read the instructions it sounds the axle is being loosened enoughto slide a thin plate between the swingarm and the axle ends, i didn'tsee any indication thatthe axle and tire was coming off. a bike stand or something to lift the rear tire off the ground or floor, that would be a benefit just take the weight off the axle. maybe someone can provide a torque for the axle, i would but i'm at the wife's computer at her work place. read the instructions thru a couple of times while lookin' at the bike and it'll come to you. have funand ride safe.

These are the ones like I had installed on both of my Dyna's. They sound similar to the ones you are talking about in reguards to the bracket behind. These are not hard to put on at all.....nothing else had to come off either. A 5/16 gear wrench is highly recommended though.

Those big round rear axle covers are kinda fugly, but they apparently just connect to the axle nuts with a little allen head screw. I assumed these other were the same, but noooooooooo. lol... You guys probably know me by now. I hate dealing with this crap. Actually, I kinda have an OCD thing or something about it. I'm really scared of getting stuff apart and screwing it up, then having no way to get the bike to the shop. lol... Yeah, I'm probably overthinking all of this stuff, but hey, that's how I am.

Nothing attaches to the axle nuts. The little allen srews hold a small cover on the larger axle cover. They were designed this way so the covers would not have to be removed everytime the wheel was removed from the bike.
