A cager hit me and the bike went down, mostly cosmetic damage on the scoot and a bruised ego on me. Fortunately I had an engine guard however now my insurance provider wants to total the bike because a new frame is 2 grand from the factory, but the only damage is the mounting tab for the engine guard on the down tubes. I'd like to keep an engine guard on the bike and the rest of the damage can be easily fixed but they may want to total it due to the fact they say they cannot fix the mounting tab. It's an 07 FXDC and I want to keep it so any advice on how to fix this would be appreciated.
They'll usually only "total" a vehicle if the cost to fix it is equal to or less than the cost to replace the bike altogether. That doesn't really make sense that they'd want to total it for something like that. They'd lose alot of money, right?
It looks to me like you could weld 2 thick washers to each side of the mounting hole to reinforce the area. I can't understand why the insurance would want to total it. If thats the case let them total it and if possible buy it back and make the repairs yourself.
I may be wrong, but if they "total" your bike and you buy it back, I assume you will then have a salvage title...No explanation in the world about mounting tabs will keep a seller interested in buying..
The insurance might be thinking it's actually part of the engine mount and that isn't the case. Make sure they understand that the damage is to an accessory hole for an engine guard not an engine mount.
wow for $2.00 you can go to the hardware store, pick up a 3in. x 2in. metal plate and drill a hole in it, to use as a backing plate and its fixed. shocking they want to total it. if they do, better take all your mods off and put your stock stuff back on it before they do. if they do total it, ask them if you can buy itback from them after they total it, bet you can get it for cheap . friend wrecked his 05 hertiage and they total it, he bought it back for 1700.00. changed his tank, exhaust, bars, pegs, and a couple other minor things and it is nowlike new.jackyl
Hey man, Glad to hear the only bruises you got where to your ego as this is easy to get over.
I wish I had the same insurance company you have as mine wouldn't total it unless it was just a ball of scrap iron. Did they tell you what price they would give you for totalling it? I have seen alot of guys buying new bikes for alot less lately then what they were a year ago so that may not be the worst option....
That blows... If you want to, do what Jackyl recomends
Just be aware that your title from here on out will be that of a "basher" and might be hard to insure (especially if its stolen or something) in the future, or if you want to sell it you will be ethically driven to let any prospective buyer know that it has a salvage title.
