You need them like they guys all say. Don't be cheap on the tools either. But, expensive is not always better either.

30 years of wrenching and yet to own one. I have used one once
- before getting the bike , have been working
on cars a long time.

- never owned a torque wrench either.

- would only consider one for , say, tightening an
alum-head to an alum-block setup.

- other than that , the size/type/location of the
fastener will tell you alot about how much torque
you'd need , and of course , don't just ham-fist
it - there's that "feel" factor.

cheers.

Well it's been repeated 2 dozen times, "Yes you need two, one in inch and one in foot pounds."
or just one of these: http://www.wttool.com/product-exec/p...m_source=froog

not as accurate but it works and is damn inexpensive.

"Not as Accurate"

Exactly. And,
There is a reason why they are less expensive.

Personally, If I am going to all the trouble of using a TW,
I am going to use a calibrated break-away (Click) TW.

Not trying to start an argument, just making a point.

Funny about how the guys that wrench for 20, 30 years say awww, ya dont need em. B.S., same guyshammer on a std socket on a metric bolt / nut, or use regular wrenches on brake lines instead of line wrenches. Could hardly wait for those type to wrench on my stuff.Just today I rotated the wheels on my wifes Denali, 140ft lbs is the torque on the aluminum wheels and they have a sequence too, its the same on my Duramax 3/4 ton pick up, used my Snap-on click type 1/2 "drive it reads something like 50 - 250ft lbs, I also have a 3/8 drive reads 20 -150ft lbs and have 3/8 drive inch pounds wrench. I am not some nut job that torques every thing just the important things, like wheels, handlebar bolts, cylinder head bolts, rocker box bolts, oil pumps, axlenutsetc. I do know this, I dont buy lock tite by the 50 gal drum either .

no argument for sure break aways are much better wrenches... just some may not want to spend 500 bucks on a couple of wrenches when this will do .... it will do just fine considering there is a nice gap in all recommended torque values in the H-D manual. Just how accurate do you need to be if you can torque a bolt to between 70-80 ft/lbs. the beam wrench works fine and can easily save a nice argument between husband and wife....

While I do have several I just saw that AUTO-ZONE lends them out along with a bunch of other special tools. FWIW.
I dont know if I would want totorque heads or a transmission valve body witha "loaned" torque wrench.

I am current shopping for some torque wrenches. Those of you that have been working on their bikes for years, what are good ranges to shop for in inch/pounds and foot/pounds?

inch pounds needs to start at zero and go into the mid 100's to cover your range of adjustments on the bike... foot pounds something like 20-80 ft/lbs. range for your scoot.
I just use a beam torque wrench as mentioned and linked to above... it's inexpensive and covers the whole range of values for my bike.
If you are not experienced may be best to spend the jack on two wrenches with at least the values listed above.
