Street2007, get a wrench with embossed or laser-engraved settings. The silkscreened markings on some wrenches wears away. We have one Craftsman that's almost unusable because you can't read the numbers. [sm=ummmmokay.gif]
I work in military aviation where a lot of components on helicopters require tq'ing, well when I changed my pipes I thought better buy a torque wrench to do the clamp nuts so out I went to an auto store and paid $60 (aussie) for one, anyway thought I would check the settings on what we call a torque tester which are very sensitive and calibrated every 6 months and I may as well have thown the $60 down the *******, it was way out (made in china), so yes you get what you pay for, I took it back and got my money back and when I need one I borrow one from work! Anyway couldn't torque the right front clamp nut anyway as the only way to do it up was with an openender!!
seem that all the guys like me that have worked in the real world for years as mech. don't have much use for torque wrenches I do own a couple and have used them mainley for head torque have never used a inch pund wrench . if you are new to the world of nuts and bolt I guess you may need one but common sence will usually get you by fine.. IMHO
nothing wrong with checking your work, esp. for a professional getting paid a ridiculous per hour rate.
please post your pro shop details so i can make sure NOT to send any work your way.
It's called feel.... I can torque 5 bolts and be all the same torque without a torque wrench(well... within an inch/lb or two)
I do have a cheap one to "check my work" but I find I'm right on by feel. I don't break or strip bolts. My gaskets don't leak due to me improperly torquing the bolts.
it's not arrogant to be able to do something that others can't..It's simply a skill that develops after years of wrenching.... Kinda like the ability to look at a bolt/nut etc. and know the size wrench to use.
it's arrogant to assume people posting here and who also use a torque wrench are rookies and lacking common sense.

I see your point I just did not read into that comment that much...
I thought he was saying to not be so worried... use your head... and don't try to Gorilla tighten everything you come across.
