you sure the bike is in 1st or second....you may be between 2nd and third... I have found on occasion when I ratchet down at a light (brake with clutch in come to stop then drop from say 4th to 1st)my bike will not go down into 1st or neutral... gotta move it a little in second then it will go to 1st.
Also when i installed my fowards I shifted up a couple of times to test and my bike got "lost" between 2nd and 3rd and would not go back to neutral.
have you just turned the key on and rock the bike back and forth and it still won't "find" neutral, using the indicator light. It's really odd that neutral went away after being parked in neutral. I'm kinda going on the between 2nd and 3rd thought mentioned previously. Maybe you accidently hit 2nd while installing the shifter and went to third (thinking it was 2nd) while looking for neutral, makes sense to me. good luck.
I note from your signature block you have an 08. New bikes naturally have a hard time finding neutral. Cold bikes naturally have a hard time finding neutral.
When I first got my bike, it wasmonths of daily riding before I could reliably get neutral before starting. Even now, if I've left mine in the cold for a few days and go to start, no power on earth is going to get it into neutral until I start the engine (clutch in.) The bike will surge against the cold, sticky clutch but then break free and I can get neutral OK.
