What Is old school?
I hear this term all the time and I think with the media today its not only over used, it mis-used. My dad was a baby boomer(hes 62 now) and I like to think I was raised old school. I remember telling Dad I want a first car.....so he found ways for me to make money to buy a POS and rebuild it and make it run. I learned by trial and error....on the motor/trans and while trying to do body work on the piece of ****. Wasnt pretty when i was done, but i was proud of it.
Then told Dad I want a motorcycle.....see above. If I didnt have the money for some new car accessories or something for the bike...we built it, fixed broke stuff, swap meets, ect... I remember rebuilding an AFB 4 barrel and a mikuni carb on the kitchen table...now I plug my car and motorcycle into my laptop.
Sony walkmans used to be new school.....iPod anyone ?
Also, old school to me is saying what you mean and not having to word things politically correct or changing the names on things to make it sound better than it is. Examples :
In my dads day they "jerry-rigged" parts....now your called a customizer
Guys in the war suffered from Shell Shock....now is post traumatic stress disorder
We used to have Christmas trees....now its family trees or holiday trees or some ****
Some people used to be just plain crazy.....now everyone has a "condition" with 41 different types of meds for it
I used to get *** whippins in school and home....now kids get time outs and talkings
I used to lay up in the back window area of my dads 71 Riviera....now kids have car seats and seatbelts ( I never said old school was always safer!)
We used to wear helmets on our motorcycles....now kids have to have them for their bicycles
The term biker used to mean something.....now anyone with 20K and a T-shirt thinks they are
Sorry I went on a rant, but I guess old school to me isjust doing **** for yourself and just trying to do whats right.
damn.
I'd still get my *** beat if I whined like that.
Also love the pix from "easy rider" But best one was mudds brother next to the Pan and the gas prices.
How's this for old school. This bike belongs to a guy I work with. He rides it every day rain of shine.

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
Fabulous post.
Old school to me ( high school 1965 grad) is points, plugs and condenser on the car. Timing light and dwell meter for the final tune-up. BTW if you ever need them, I have them in the garage. Also I have a wooden clutch alignment tool for a 1958 ford, 6 cyl., 3-speed trans. No computer, no ABS, no cat converter, no vsc, etc etc.
During the blizzard of '78 in Boston area, alot of people forget that we didn't have cell phones, there was NO internet, and no such thing as an ATM.
In the USMC in 1966, our issued weapon was the M-14. The M16 was still months away. No GPS. We used a compass, can you imagine that? We ate C rations, not the new stuff which has steak, chops, ice cream, etc. And the DI's could still beat the s_it out of you if you f_cked up. Men were men and women knew the difference.
And of course when I was a senior in HS, I worker at a discount gas station. 19.9C a gallon. Yup 5 gallons for a buck!!
I know i am forgetting tons of other stuff, but at 60, alsimers (phon) might be setting in.
Ride safe. Thanks for the memories.
