C66,

Fabulous post.

Old school to me ( high school 1965 grad) is points, plugs and condenser on the car. Timing light and dwell meter for the final tune-up. BTW if you ever need them, I have them in the garage. Also I have a wooden clutch alignment tool for a 1958 ford, 6 cyl., 3-speed trans. No computer, no ABS, no cat converter, no vsc, etc etc.

During the blizzard of '78 in Boston area, alot of people forget that we didn't have cell phones, there was NO internet, and no such thing as an ATM.

In the USMC in 1966, our issued weapon was the M-14. The M16 was still months away. No GPS. We used a compass, can you imagine that? We ate C rations, not the new stuff which has steak, chops, ice cream, etc. And the DI's could still beat the s_it out of you if you f_cked up. Men were men and women knew the difference.

And of course when I was a senior in HS, I worker at a discount gas station. 19.9C a gallon. Yup 5 gallons for a buck!!

I know i am forgetting tons of other stuff, but at 60, alsimers (phon) might be setting in.

Ride safe. Thanks for the memories.

I graduated about 15 years later, but still have one of those clutch alignment tools, a dwell meter and a timing light. I was a gearhead back then and still am, but things are different now. Not as much tinkering required. My poor mother never knew what sort of vehicle she would find half disassembled in the garage...the good old days!

This is a great thread Clutch - thanks for starting it!

Same bike, was my dads, gas was 17.9 35 cents got Ya a hamburger, fries and a large soda
OLD SCHOOL to me is just like back then knowing your wheels well enough that you can fix it without having to tale it to the dealer. Have been building my own since Dad taught me how to rebuild his. Ran 8 inch slugs in one of the bikes with a peanut tank and had a helmet with the stars and bars before easy rider came out. Hung out with the Galloping Gooses MC for a while before Viet Nam. Your Old School.

MUD - don't ever get rid of that picture..........it IS what it is all about..........When I started driving in 1957, I think gas was 21.9 and a quart of oil in a glass bottle with a metal spout was 19 cents.

And the first McDonalds jingle was "47 cents for a three course meal at McDonalds" (hamburger, french fries and a coke)

THATpicture is old school to me............

This has got to be the best post I've read on the forum in a long time. Thanks for taking the time to write it up and share your memories with us Clutch.

Here's a picture of my father from back in the day...

Built in 1970, my brother owns it to this day.

When it was built, it was new school.

PanHead lower end, ShovelHead top.
Shocks.... etc etc

Shorties above, straights below.

Hand made leather seat below (with a ponytail)

hahaha... this machine has seen so many changes over thirty some odd years,
but, it is old school now........ real......

To me Old School is anything before my time. A look that has come and gone and at one time was considered "Cool!" I think it is also a desire for simpler, happier times. Someone mentioned that new technology is better, I agree! You can't deny that it has made our life easier and longer lasting. That still doesn't change my love for the old days of Leaded Gas, and simple bowl carbs! There is an art to it and that is what makes it so cool!

I will seldom read any post longer than a sentence or two.
Yours I read every word and didn’t want it to end.

I especially liked the part about boiling the chain. Its the simple things in life that we now take for granted. I would gladly trade my modern technologylifestyle to go back and live in those days! Back when friends had time to hang out,I'm 28 and wish I was older so that I could have lived back then. This world is in need of a change.
