Default Oil Leak Question

Bought a used 03 Super Glide which has developed a leak. Backside of primary chaincase is dirty but not really wet. Some signs on drive belt also. Main oil signs show to be on bottom of transmission pan. Transmission drain plug had a bad o-ring. I thinking this is source of leak and everything else is from blowing oil.My question is would you just replace o-ring, wash bike and watch or would you pull primary housing to see if signs from anywhere else? I've read the manual and have been a auto / heavy equipment mechanic for over 30 yrs so I'm sure that I can do it without any problems. Thanks for any input.

OKTim, I've got an 02 S/G that developed a leak that sounds like yours, this occurred around 7,500 miles. In short it turned out to be the shift shaft seal. It requires the inner primary case to be removed, check the manual. Can you get a hold of some black light oil dye and a black light? Clean up the mess, put some dye in the transmission (about 1/2 to 1 oz.) operate the bike for about a hundred miles then shine the black light underneath the primary and if its the trans oil it will glow. Use an inspection mirror to find the source. If it's not glowing then I am sure it wouldbe primary oil and a seal has let loose. Here's something else to look at, see if there is oil being vented out of the transmission, the hose will drip onto the inner case and to the ground. I fill my trans fluid to 22 ozs. for that reason.

the shift shaft seal I mentioned was improved with better sealing features sometime in 2003.

Thanks for the idea's. Didn't even think about the dye. I'll finish my fluid changes with the dyetomorrow and see what happens. Thanks again.
