new aileron hand grips
My question is how hard are they going to be to change.(or should I enlist help from a
friend).
I am very handy and have done all the work on bike my self so far.
Exhaust, air cleaner ,fuel pack, foward controls..
I'll assume you have stock grips now? If so, you may be able to remove the left one without cutting it, but why bother. Take a razor blade, cut it to the bar, and peel it off. The aftermarket grips I had before on the left side, did not install under the switch housing. Instead it just slid on and then fastened with 3 set screws, so no glue to deal with either. I remember the tech at the dealer telling me that the HD grips do fit under the switch housings on both sides. Even still, the left side should go on rather easily, but I assume you'll have to at least loosen the bolt holding the switch housing together if not remove it to get the lip on the grip under there. You shouldn't need to glue it based on what they told me.
All of the throttle grips, however, go on the same way. So, here is what I did. I went to the Kuryakyn website and printed off instructions to install their grips (even though they weren't Kury grips). It will give you a step by step to install the throttle grip. You'll basically loosen the 2 throttle cables but either make a mark or count the number of turns on the nuts so you can put them back where they were when you are done. Then, remove the bolt holding the switch housing together and pull it open (gently and carefully) enough to remove the cables from the old grip and slide the old grip off. Put the new grip on and put the cables back on the same way they were. Reassemble the switch housing and then retighten the throttle cables and you are good to go.
Now, with that said and as others have noted, the ends of the cables fit into these little barrel shapped brass ferrules. They are not permanently attached to the cables and they tend to come off and can be very hard to find if you let one get loose on you. Put something on the floor to keep them from bouncing away from you so much or be very careful not to let one go. I was warned of this and still dropped one and it took me 15 minutes to find it on my shop floor. It was in a place that, of course, I would have least expected it to go.
Good luck. FYI - I did it alone and so can you. But, installing that throttle grip will be a much easier job with an extra set of hands helping you.
