I have read a lot of posts about replacing hand grips, but the posters seem to be writing as if the reader knows what he is doing. I just purchased my first bike two weeks ago. The seller gave me hand grips that match the foot pegs, so I'd like to put them on. The problem is I haven't a clue what to expect or where to start. Although I know my way around a pair of pliers, everything else has stayed in my tool box for over a decade.
How do I remove the old grips? I read about using a screw driver to lift up an edge of the grip and squirt some wd40 in there to loosen it up. I've also read that the throttle grip might be attached to the throttle control. Well, I don't want to try to rip the thing off if it's attached to something, and I dont want to take the throttle assembly apart for no reason either.
I understand there are some good kinds of glue for the new grips, but if the right grip is attached to the throttle assembly should I glue it on anyway?
What is the time involved in this sort of thing? I'd like to get it done this evening so I can ride all weekend, but I dont want to be up till the wee hours of the morning because I started too late.
I hope I don't sound like an idiot. I just dont want to spend the weekend learning from continual mistakes instead of cruising around. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!
OK, go to the DIY forum and search on replacing grips.
There are full instructions with pictures. Its very easy, just read through once before starting.
Most important thing is to remember to put a card or washer in the brake lever before taking apart the hand assembly on the right side.
Left grip split longways with a razorblade, comes right off. Right grip just slides off.
If you have new HD brand grips, you need no glue. Should take about 20 minutes for your first time even going real slow.
Be sure to put a towel on the ground under the right grip. There are 2 little brass ferrules that might fall, and you don't want to spend forever searching for them.
On a 1 to 10 scale of difficulty (10 being hardest) this is about a 2. Harder than putting in gas, but easier than learning to ride.
Here is a little something else I ran into. On my 07 uc the idle or push cable came off at the fi. If you push cable appears too long pull the breather and check the cable. Mine was off completely. Thanks for the help.
