Anyone ever tried powdercoating over chrome??? I did my A/C cover with a rattle wrinkle can after I bead blasted the chrome off the A/N billet piece....But it really didn't take the chome off just roughed it up..... I have maybe 15 parts I wanna powdercoat black... Thanks !!!
in order to powdercoat you will have to remove the chome... i media blast it... that is part of the reason that powdercoating HD parts is kind of a pain in the @$$... harley does such an awesome job of chroming... to get a propper powdercoat you have to remove the chrome (unless u are doing black chome or something along those lines where you use the chrome to shine with the powder coat) but other than that if you are powdercoating i say remove it... you always want to get down to bare metal then powdercoat to ensure that there is propper paint adhesive... if you do not it will chip and crack... to get a more detailed answer contact Powdercoater he is the MAN when it comes to this!.... if you are going to paint say with a rattle can... just scuff up the surface with sandpaper or scotch pad and shoot it, it will hold, but use a good primer, i usually use a 400 - 600 grit paper before i prime on chome if i am rattle canning it... then shoot with your color, light coats let it dry 800 girt light sand, another coat of paint, 1200 wet sand, clear, 1200 wet sand and buff... will look like a pro job! i have done bikes with rattle cans before and people thought that i had them prof painted... takes time to do it right but if you take your time it can come out amazing!
I painted my lowers... it is so easy and i did not feel like dealing wit the dissassembly and all that BS... heck you can do that for like 20 bucks in supplys and if you do not like it then take it in or send em out and ill get em done. either way... i recomend painting them if you like the look... I took my time and sanded it down real nice, then sprayed it, let it cure for over a week like it says... then layerd it on again... let it cure for about 1 month then i cleard it, did not need to but i like a real high shine and the clear helped me get that... let me know if you need some help... Ed helped me out when i did mine
