I want to paint my chrome wheel spikes Black. Can i do this and get the paint to stick if i sand them first?
I don't want to have to get them powder coated as i do not want to pay the extra $$$ and wait two weeks
Thanks in advance
Ps I was thinking of using a black lacquer and then buffing them out
I used to paint chrome parts alot. trust me it only looks good for a few days, after a couple miles all that little bits of dust and pebbles will turn it into a hideous combination of black and chrome, and the surface will be too rough to repaint.
Get the ceramic high-heat stuff....if you want gloss use the flat version with the gloss over it...poor man's powdercoating but looks and works great. If you can, get a heat gun or a small used oven or something and bake the parts after the paint cures, it hardens up and looks great.
Ok well i just sanding the chrome spikes and they came out a really cool brushed finish...If the paint dosn't stick I will just strip and leave the Brushed finish until i can get them Powder coated
Dont know if you have seen this or not.....Dupli-Color has a paint that you can apply over chrome and it works real well, as I have used it to give a transparent "anodized" look to some of the parts on my 72 Camaro, and will use it on my bile as soon as I get it! If you go to the website there is a link at the bottom of the page called "As seen on TV" and look to the right for the one labeled METALCAST. They don't have a black yet, but they do have a new addition called smoke....hope this helps...www.dupli-color.com

Sounds good. I would try out some of the other suggestions in the other posts above this. Some companies do make paint for your purpose and will hold up better than regular paint, Maybe you could buy a can of each, and a cheap chrome bicycle wheel, and test out how they hold up before you spray your harley.
