no, the kit is useless....the kit has nothing to do with the rim....it's the bead on the dunlop tire....it's different than other 180s.... this issue has been beat to death over the past 2 years....that's not to say that an Avon, Metz, or any other 180 can't be used on the 4.5 rim, they can.... but it's risky, so i've been told
I put the kit on my bike last year. It comes with 2 new interior fender plates. There is kind of a hook at the end of the plates that holds the signal wires in a different position. But the main reason for the kit is it comes with 2-$25 a piece allen head bolts for the rear strut-signal bolt. The allen head does not stick out as far into the tire as the stock hex head bolt. The kit costs so much due to the technology and research for HD to figure out that allen bolts don't stick out as far as hex bolts.
I've been told this but apparently HD doesn't recognize this as fact that, if you have the detachable sideplate hardware installed, you don't need this kit because you already have different fender strut backplates and the signal relocation strut bolts are different as well. I know for a fact I have no clearance issues with wiring under my fender and I do have the detachable hardware set. I'm not paying for the "kit". I will be gettin that tire though.
I agree, The kit is useless!
I did theNON detatchable sideplates and have no issues at all. Wires are tucked in just fine and the Button head bolts Create a low profile.
I just posted a pic of the kit because 07 bobber wanted to see what it looked like. No Big Deal...........
Detatchable or rigid sideplates do not need any mods to fit the SE 180.
FWIW, The Metzeler tech said the tire I was interested in buying [ 170/60/17 ] was 8mm WIDER Than the Stock Dunlop 160/70/17.
He was WRONG!!!! It's the other way around. [:@]

The stealer install requires a kit. It is a liablity issue on their part. I was told. I didn't make a big issue on it. I would be rather safe than sorry when it comes to $70.00 and my life.
