I've got an 07 FXDWG and after reading a few articles and dreading every groove in the road for about a year now have decided that moving to a different tire brand probably isn't going to be as effective as moving to a different wheel all together.
So, my question is this. Are there any stock wheels out there (wire spoke) that I could use to swap out my stock 21"? Or would it be better to just have my rim re-laced with a wider rim?
I'd like to go with a marginally bigger/fatter tire on the front but I don't want to alter the way my bike currently sits. I.E. I'd like to find some combination that would be the same height from the ground to the top of the tire as my current stock tire.
Oh, and I'm not worried about the fender; I'll most likely just take it off.
From what others have told me, a wider tire isn't going to help that much when it comes to highway grooves. In fact, I've driven cages where wider tires caused more problems than thinner tires.
Solution? Take the back roads if you can. It's safer, more peaceful, and usually more scenic.
I just put WG trees on my 07 Street Bob and am now running a 21" x 3.5 " rim with a 120/70 tire. It is laced using an aftermarket WG hub, but your OEM piece would do just fine. There is a noticable difference in the 120 from the 100 that comes on the bike. Nevermind the improvement of a 90 series like your WG. BTW the 120 fit under the Street Bob fender just fine, not sure how it would do with a WG fender (but like you said it wouldnt matter anyway)
I've got an 01 Wide Glide, and always had the same problems when running dunflops.....FInally took the advice of some friends, switched over to Michellin.......I don't have any of those same tracking problems, even going over freshly grated roads, or grated bridges...
I'm getting ready to go to a 21x3.5 rim on my 07 WG. Here is a recent thread with pics of a Metz 120 under a stock WG fender. I like the look and am betting I'll like the handling too.
