The 1000 mile should be done by dealer. Why screw with any question on the warranty and safetyissue. They have a record of the service done for you or your heirs.

They can't require you to come in and do service to maintain a warranty under the Magnuson Moss Act
The very first chapter of the SM is step by strp 1k service. No one has mentioned yet that you'll need a lift. In order to check the fall away of the front end you'll need to have the front wheel off the ground. Keep your $300, buy a lift, a service manual, some non HD oil, a new black filter, and a 12 pak and do it yourself.

I am not questioning if it is legal or not. Its going to cost you more in legal fees to fight it than the $300.00 for the service if the warranty question is invoked.

HD can and will only fight you on a warranty claim IF the cause of a particular failure is as a result of an action that:
1. the servicerperformed an action that was innapropriate for the model and was the proximate cause of the failure.
2. the servicer failed to perform an action that was appropriate, and was the proximate cause of the failure.
If you did everything the SM says for 1,000 mile service, you're go to go. HD is not in the business of f*cking with owners, despite some folks experiences. They're no more likely to screw with you for performing you're own routine service than Ford or Chevy. Do it right and you're okay. Don't know how to do it right? Why the hell are you trying it at all?
Thanks to all of you who answered the post I started. To the rest of you who tried to hijack it, no thank you. Please go grab someone else thread and run away with it. I already got the warranty issue straightened out with the dealer I bought the bike from, in writing. All I have to do is keep all of my records and reciepts for the items complied with and for the materials bought. It's not that I don't know what I'm doing, I do have some mechanical skills. I make planes fly, on a daily basis, so that they can go and blow sh*t up. I'm sure with a service manual, the correct tools and some time, I can get it done. All I was asking was about the money issue, maybe a ballpark figure.
