Default 1,000 Mile Service Question . . .

I'm ready to have this service done. I called the dealer, and was quoted $300 which included all the oils being changed over to synthetic. I was wondering how much it would cost, to do it correctly, on my own. I'll need to get a service manual and all the fluids I'll need. Being an aircraft mechanic, I have all of the tools I can think of, minus any HD specialty tools I'll need.

If any of you could come up with a ballpark number, it would be greatly appreciated.

Anywere from 30-45 bucks for fluids/gaskets - depending on what you get. From there, its your time and labor.

cost of fluids, cost of filter, cost of gaskets/o-rings, etc., time/patience, $45 to $60 for service manual (depending on internet $45 from zanottis or chicago hd, or local dealer $60), and whatever tools you may not have yet. Having adjusted my throttle and clutch when replaced my bars, it wasn't as bad as I thought, and the patience thing is a must if never worked on a bike before (me), good luck - hope this helps.

100 bucks or less depending on if ya need to buy a service maual. Go with a full syn too like Redline or other brand. The Hd stuff is not a full synthetic and like everything else overpriced.

Do it yourself, this is my second Harley and I have yet to have service work done where there was not at least one item that was not done right. I now service it myself and did my own 1k service on my current bike. If you work on aircraft, working on a Harley which is mostly old tech will be a snap, a service manual is a must though.

Yes, I work on aircraft, but they're B-52s...Not much technology there, but on the other hand, time and patience, yes.

I guess I'll go get the service manual, and find out what I'll need for parts, fluids, tools, etc. Thank you guys for your quick responses. Hopefully doing this myself will save me a couple hundred bucks to put towards my forward controls...

See post #2...nothing to it, do it yourself and you'll have $200. left in your pocket and better spent on mods. Just my .02

The service manual is 45-60 depending on where you get it. I won't use harley syn 3 either. Lots better oils out there, and I wouldn't use the same thing in all 3 holes.
