Is "Denim Black" just a fancy term for flat black? whatever it is, can I get it done anywhere or is this a Harley only "color". I have an Idea for a neat paint job but of course I want to avoid any dealer involvment if possible.

NO I have a black denim bob and my understanding is that it is a unique paint and not ez to copy. I love it cuz its ez to keep clean. Doesnt show prints etc. HD reccs windex or HD gloss. They do NOT recc wax or other things used on most gloss finishes as it can actually turn it shiny? Saw a manager at an HD dealer in quad-cities try matching some dull red flames on the tank and they just did not work. Dont know if that helped but it is a killer look.
you can buy the paint in spray cans or buy the quart from HD, each can is about 18 bucks if i remember correct. last winter i did a tombstone fender , painted in my shed . set up a side drafted paint booth with a cheap box fan an some paint tarp. worked great on all the parts i painted. i used the spray cans, the fender alone took almost a whole can, paint came out matching the tank perfect but you really gotta do a few coats, after a year ive banged up the fender a bit with luggage and crap from my xcountry trip. paint doesnt hold up as well as factory. id suggest geting a spray gone or going somewhere you can rent a booth so you can bake the paint on.

thats funny, i just did and have exactly the same thing u have, but i bobbed the fender. I did this last week.
Yea the HD paint costs me 20 bucks each can after taxes. The color is different, its like flat black mixwith really dark gray/blue. Yes,It is Harley's only color. Cant findit anywhere else, I've looked for it.I bought total of 4 cans (1 primer,2 denim black coat, 1 final coat [specific one on HD computer]). costs me around 80 bucks. 1 can of denim black is good enough, but rather have another for back up. **important** sand the fender before u start paint it. I learned my lesson.
If you know some one in the auto body buisness they can get it or from a paint distributor there are many alternatives you can also buy black and flattening compound and mix yourself till you get what you want
It's actually pretty tough to match, I don't know about the color but the level of gloss is what makes it tough to match it's somewhere in between flat and Satin. The closest match I've found is Krylons Semi Flat Black. But I was only checking different rattle can paints available at assorted hardware and dept stores.

Looking at your bike in vivid black, doesn't look like you have a matching issue. So unless you're married to the 'denim' black, any flat black with a matte clearcoat would work fine, be as durable as long as it has UV protection in it, and clean just as well. Duplicolor hot rod black is what I use on my hot rod and works fine. If you're doing it yourself, just ask around local auto body shops and see what they'd recommend. I've heard John Deere makes an excellent, highly durable flat black that a lot of hot rodders use.
The following is a paragraph from a Harley service bulletin dated July 23, 2005. Just as the first Denim Black Bob's were getting ready to roll out. And I quote...
"Black Denim differs from traditional high-gloss finishes on other Harley Davidson motorcycles. Like denim fabric, Black Denim paint will burnish with age and use, adding character and personality to the finish of the motorcycle. The integrity of the paint, however, is not effected by the age."
