I am going to put apes on my bike next week.
here is the long question.
I have a 05 sg custom,thinking either 13,14, or 16 bars.
Wanting to do it myself the dealer will charge me $700.00 to do it..
I am 6 foot tall also if that helps.
And are the pre-wired barkits worth it? and are the controls they come with any good?
Where should i get the S.S cables from?
How wide should they be between the bends,And pullback,I like the stock pullback on mine.
Any pics would help.
Thanks
Here is a link to the mods I did this last month. 16in buffalo apes sterling chromite cables by magnum shielding (best looking cables IMO) used stock switches and pulled my own wire. Not a bad mod to do just a little time comsuming if you have any questions pm me and I try to help.
15" chubbies here. I don't have experience with any of the pre-wired bars on ebay but wiring your own isn't really too hard. There are some guides on the forums here somewhere, just can't find them right now....
I generally find the best parts prices at Jireh Cycles - you should order a catalog. http://www.jirehcycles.com/
Dont know if this will help or not. But, when I first put the 18"s on my bike(12yrs ago when my dad had it), we used a set of bars from Custom Chrome, or someone like that. We pulled our own wires and used the stock controls. Wasnt that bad.. A couple months ago, I ordered the 1.25" bars, loaded with wiring and chrome controls from Demon Cycle on e-bay. First, I'll say that I love the bars and controls. Big difference in feel as well as look. I'm not sure who actuall makes them because Demons wont return my e-mail, but I would go with that combination again in a heartbeat. HOWEVER, I will NEVER buy from Demons again because of their service. Once they got my money, they stopped responding to me and that concerns me, ifI were to ever have an issue with something I bought from them.. BTW, put the polly bushings on at the same time..
I ordered a pre-wired chrome set of 14's from Hill Country Custom Cycles, along with the braided cables. I was happy with the quality of the controls, and bars, but decided to go taller. I ended up ordering Chubby Wild One 16's, and have not looked back......I just pulled the controls from the 14's and ran them thru the 16's. I still had enough throttle, brake and clutch cable length to complete the installation. It's not a difficult job, just a little time consuming. Some good music, and a few cold ones should help you complete the job in a few hours.
The Hill Country bars don't have as much pullback (8.5" vs. 12.5") as the Chubbies, and are a tad wider in the center width. Nice bars, but the Chubbies look much better on my Wide Glide front end, IMHO.
I also ordered a set of 1 1/4" black apes from Hill County. They're 16" and gorgeous. They came with the necessary cabling, but i had them internally wired. I wasn't about to try it myself. But the quality is great on the apes and the thick look is awesome. Now i gotta get used to riding that high in the air.
