I'm new to the forum and want to say this site is an awesome collection of information.
I have an '02 FXDWG and have removed the stock sissy bar and sideplate. I like the clean fender look and would love to either leave the sideplate off or if it is necessary to have one, use one that is cut the same as the rear fender support cover.
In my current config is the sideplate necessary or can I just bolt the rear fender support cover back on with out the sideplate? If not could someone tell me where I can find one that does not stick up like the stock one and instead hides perfectly behind the cover?
If I understand you right, the side plates are for sissy bar support only. No sisssy bar, no side plates required. You can leave them off no problem.
Right-o. Welcome to the forums, nice choice of bike. Despite what my signature says, I ride an 02 fxdwg also.
If you're really feeling gutsy and want a real clean fender, pull all the strut/support covers off. Should look like black cast underneath. On the right dwg, that would look wicked.
Thanks a bunch guys. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to bend the struts or damge the fender without the sideplate there.
Biggol, hilarious signature. I think all in all I'm riding one of those as well. You know I thought about removing the chrome covers and just having the black struts but I'm not sure how it will look w/ my color. I have the bright blue color. I'll send a pic if I do it.

Nah, you won't hurt it. If you do that, please post picks. If I ever get a bagger I'm going to strip my wg down and black a bit of it out. My struts would be bare then also. You should have the same wrinkle black engine I have, if you blacked out the bettery box, fork lowers and maybe the rotors you could pull it off. Either way - best of luck to you!
