No waving over here in the UK (unless it's my wife waving at kids in cars) but we do the friendly nod to other bikers. I don't sterotype anyone but it does appear to be Harley riders over here who do not nod back...not really sure why that is.
Over in France and the like they have a salute (2 fingers down low), or a lift of the left leg seems to also be a greeting.

I wave for two good reasons...If a cage see's me wave they hopefully will look at what I'm waving at and thus bring more attention to bikes for the cagers...that is good...
...also, on long rides it's nice to have a reason to strectch my arms and shoulders out...
