When I still rode metrics, I was very confused by people on Harleys that waved to me. I always thought it was a strictly HD thing to do. I never remember seeing another jap rider initiate the wave and neither did I, thinking it was a poseur thing to do trying to fit in where I didn't belong. Now that I ride a real bike I'll be waving to everyone and chipmunks, except for those on cell phones, they still get the finger.
I am trying to develop a rule to guide me. On a summer Sunday when a gazillion bikes are out, waving gets rather stupid. So I'm thinking I will wave at the first 10 bikesI see, and then no more waves until late in the day when fewer bikes are out.
My favorite wave was on a busy Sunday when I must have given a thousand waves. I saw a guy in a motorized wheelchair and I automaticallygave him a wave too. When I realized what I had done, I felt foolish. Then the more I thought about it, I realized that it was really cool.

Man, I don't mean this in a cruel way but that was some funny sh*t. I can picture you all confused and torn up 5 miles down the road!!!!! I'dof waved to him too. I'd hope a biker would do that for me.
Yeah, I wave. Sometimes I initiate and other times I return. I get pissed when others don't waive back until I pass another biker that I catch waving right as I realize it's too late to wave back. That sucks b/c I don't want to be a non-waver. LOL Why get offended? Who knows.
