The last time I went to Germany I shipped my bike with my house hold goods there and back. But that was a rice burner that I didn't respect as much as I do my Bob. Should I trust the moving people with this bike as well?
They do a pretty good job of moving bikes in the HHG. Only other option if you're gonna take it (and i suggest you do!!) is shipping it as your POV. The problem here is it still goes on a slow boat but this time not in a nice protective crate. IMO, ship it as part of your HHG. You will love riding the autobahn and twisties on it. Take some basic maintenance parts with you though (filters etc) cos at least when I was there parts were outrageous unless you want to wait for them to be shipped from the states to your APO. Oh and take plenty of pictures of her before they load her in the crate. This way, just in case there is any damage, you can show the condition of it when you shipped it. Wish I could have claimed mine as a dependent and put her on the plane next to me, but what ya gonna do. Couldn't stand 4 years with out it.
But in all honesty, I wouldn't worry about it too much, I was a quality control inspector for HHG shipments in Germany, saw many a bike come in the crates, can't remember but one that was damaged. They do a good job of protecting it, plus now you get full replacement value insurance with your shipment.
Take lots of pictures, preferbably from a camera that uses film. Digital pics are not widely accepted in claims. What part of Germany are you headed? I just found out thatI am headed to Stuttgart later this year. I will be shipping two bikes in my household goods. Also check and see if your insurance covers it. If you make a claim for damages they to not pay replacement cost for parts like replacing the chrome. They put a scratch in the dash of my bike when they shipped it here from Germany but only paid me about $75 for a $250 part.
If you're Out1aw, be sure to take lots of duct tape and zip strips. ;-)
HHG rules just changed to automatically give full replacement value insurance up to 40k. If you have any specific questions, hell even after you get there, PM me, I might still have a buddy or two where ever it is you are going there. It's a small career field.
Man, you guys are awesome! Thanks for all the great info. It is not set in stone yet. My wife has been 'tentatively' offered a job (civilian DoD) in Vilseck. We were stationed in Heidelberg in 95-96.Our kid was born there and we are all pretty excited to have the opportunity to go back.
That is some good news about the insurance. I will be shipping two bikes over. Hopfully nothing will happen to them. Now to find a place to park them. Military housing does not have garages....[:@]
