I hate mine...
it:
1. getsbugs in my teeth from the ear to ear grin
2.makes me waita minute before I get off it, as I can't bend my leg....If you know what I mean.
3. makes me wait for my other friends after a curvy road.
4. makes me do 70mph+ because of the 6 speed.
Gearing. The 6 speed is really nice, if you spend time on the freeway at speeds around 70+. But the 06 is geared kinda tall in 1st. I read the lowered it for the 07's. But I'v not ridden one.
Engine Size: Bigger is better, you can't beat cubes. So, stock out of the box the '07 will make more power. Since it's a bigger engine, it will also use more fuel. Life's full of trade offs.
Of course, you can increase the stock 88 to a 95 with a simple cylinder/piston swap. If you want more compression out of the 88, you'll be doing that stuff anyway.
The 96 gets it's displacement from a longer stroke. Longer strokes create more torque, but limit rpm's. Again, life's full of trade offs. If you just gotta have the baddest bike in town, you'll want103 or 107 cubes, so the 96 is better starting point.
Asthetics, colors, doo-dads, etc are pretty much the same year to year.
So, IMO, you should evaluate what your ultimate goals are, and then buy the bike that fits best.
There is a little difference between the 96 and the 88. I like my 88 for the fact that is been out there for 8 to 10 years. The 96 has only been the full production for a year. I jsut like waiting so that the factory and get the flaws taken care of. Betwen a shaft drive and a blet drive there is a big diff. I have a yamaha xs 1100S it was shaft drive and man that thing would hook up and go the only thing was that there wasnt much torque and thats the time that harley has a lot of is torque. So there is some differences some good and some bad.
I have an 07 lowrider, when I was out shopping for mine ( I found it used a a dealer with a whopping 300 miles on it) the best peice of advice I got was by the most bike you can for your money, and make sure your comfortable on it.
