Welcome....I'm a little surprised that you found an 06 that still had stock pipes..anyway I wouldn't get in a hurry. A new system or just slip ons plus a tuner will be a big investment, best to try and get it right the first time. Spend some time at the dealership on a Saturday and listen to bikes come and go + I've never met a biker that didn't want to talk about their bike, sort of like showing pictures of your kids.
The exhaust is a big part of the look of your bike. I started with Rush slip ons with 1.75" baffles, but wanted a louder and deeper sound and changed to 2" baffles.
I was happy with the sound but not the look so I changed to a full exhaust system - the V&H Big Shot Staggered and am happy with the sound, loudness, and fit on my bike.
I agree with hanging around other bikes to get an idea what they sound like, but also think about whether the appearance of them will fit with your "vision" of where you want to go with your bike.
Strong suggestion, don't do any thing to your stock mufflers. Why? A lot of towns and metro areas have sound police now and if you have to go back to the stock exhaust then they are there. Get some low restriction slip-ons, I.E. cycle shacks or dyna powers that are close to the appearance of stock mufflers. Don't draw no attention to yourself on crowded streets by twisting the throttle just hear yourself cause no doubt somebody will call the sound police on you. Welcome to the HD family and ride safe.
Another suggestion would be to get some Peacemaker mufflers. They have an electrically actuated flap in the mufflers that open with the push of a switch to give you that great loud sound that we all love and then shut to quiet mode for places where you don't want to be noticed by the sound police. I put a set on my bike and like them a lot.
