Default RE: Insurance?

Also when you buy insurance, if you care, be careful of those insurance companies who are lobbying to stop insuring modified bikes. A lot of things on the web about this. I have Geico, not Progressive. Changed to Geico from a broker who found me the "lowest among companies". The training class pays for itself, though it was forced for free in the military. Still waiting for my new Harley.

Default RE: Insurance?

Maybe it is a Florida thing, but I have yet to know a person who got anything other than an absurd price quote from Geico. Car or motorcycle, young or old, minivan or sports car or mid-size sedan, small town or big city, 10 years ago or 5 years ago or 3 months ago.

My car quote for equivalent coverage was DOUBLE that of Allstate last time I checked. Good driving record, reasonable vehicles, etc. The question I can't quite figure out is how in the world they can save anyone 10 or 15% on their car insurance when they have 4 completely different ad campaigns running all the time and at least 4 different commercials for each campaign running all at the same time. I bet I haven't watched a show in 3 years that didn't have a Geico ad in it. The radio is even worse! That ain't free.

My Street Bob quote with uninsured and some coverage for a few thousand of accessories was like $1400 per year!!!!! That is nearly double what I pay through Progressive for as close to equivalent as possible. I am definitely not done shopping around.

Again, it may be a Florida thing, but uninsured was not a mere $10 more per month, it more than doubles my insurance cost. I figure I don't want to make a bad time even worse so it gives me some peace of mind.

2 years ago when I got my Sportster, I called my Allstate agent (not a very good one) and was told I couldn't combine with my other policies to get any discount so I moved on, a little miffed. I probably should have tried again when I got the new bike and at least gotten a quote.

I suspect I am a little over-insured, but still the policies should be competitive for similar coverage and they aren't. The prices are all over the place. I will say that I checked with 4 providers before re-upping with Progressive and Geico was worst by $300 at least.

Top, have you checked Foremost (HD insurance). I'm paying 600 a year including uninsured, low deduc, all the crap. I'm not in the liberal state of Cali but Foremost was one of the cheapest and easiest to deal with. If you have USAA for your car check to see who they deal with for bikes.

I've had a H-D policy for the last 9 years. First on my Sporty, then on my WG. For most of those years, the underwriter was Dairyland.

A few years ago I had a crash. Did some minor damage to the bike. Dairyland sent an adjuster out right away. And then the following week I hd a check in hand for the estimate amount. After the repair, the bill was about $1K higher than the estimate. They said, "Send us the receipt". A week later I had another check for the full amount. No questions asked, prompt payment. They didn't even deduct the $250 deductable.

The underwriter in CO is now Sentry, not Dairyland. Mine was a very trick '97 WG. I loved that bike. I had spent probably $30K on one thing and another over the years. My bike was stolen a couple of months ago. My policy says, "The value of your cycle up to $30,000". Great, I'm thinking. I would guestimate the value to be $18-20K.

When I filed a claim, they offered me $8K. $8K! According to them, they only cover the stock bike with no add on parts. No windshields, saddlebags, footpegs, aftermarket seats, etc. The policy should read, "The value of half your bike...". According to them, value is based on NADA base value. What used motorcycle anywhere is worth $30K? I had to go through the process of getting an appraisal after the fact and duking it out with their appraiser. We finally settled on $18,500. Less than it was worth to me, but I think fair.

Moral of the story? 1. Don't get H-D insurance. Go directly to Dairyland. 2. Consider Progressive. Much cheaper. 3. Get an appraisal after you've made significant changes. Call the insurance company and make sure those items are covered. Get it in writing.

Here's my last thought on insurance companies: They are not your friend! Don't ever think that. Not just bike insurance, but all insurance companies. They don't make billions in profits every year by paying claims.

I went with Progressive too... No un-insured but, whatever was needed for the finance co and the state... Total is $274 a year.

Oh my heart about stopped when I read this.....PLEASE contact Progressive and purchase Uninsured motorist coverage. You don't know how many idiots are out there without insurance. If you get hit by one you will have no options and heaven forbid you are injured. You don't want some uninsured idiot to total your bike and then you have no bike ...and no funds to replace it or be left with uncovered medical expenses because you didn't want to pay an extra $10 a month do you? PLEASE ADD THE COVERAGE! PLEASE!!!!! I see this happen every day.
I went with AARP Foremost for $500 a year here in Phoenix on my RK Standard. I wish it was only $10 a month more for un-insured and under-insured. It would have raised my rate to over $1000 for a year. With good medical you don't need it. Also Foremost has full replacement for 2 years and covers $3500 in extras and $1500 for safety gear in their standard policy. We have high insurance rates in Phoenix Metro because of all the crazy drivers from other states that moved here and the dry heat fries everybody's brain in the summer. I know I used to be normal when I lived in Montana and 21 years ago I moved here.

I have my insurance with....oh yeah that's right. I live in a communist country. Canada where I can't shop around for bike insurance.. There's only one game in town and that's run by the gov't. I was paying about 2400 for 1/2 a year of riding. I finally found a loop hole and by moving out of the city and into the country i now am paying about 1500 on the same bike.

No accidents/tickets for 10 years.

I just finished snow blowing my driveway......those who are able to ride at this time of year, count yourselves lucky.

stay safe.
