Default *DONE with pics* SO i got a new project

we are getting ready to head to key west from chicago next month with 10 bikes... i dont want to bring my huge travel pack, now that i turned my side plates into detachable saddle bags and put some bags on my girls bike we just need a bit more storage... so i am taking stell55chevyidea with the quick tube a bit further... no smart @$$ home eck comments either! here is my plan and my pics so far... i got the concrete pour form 12"(12 buck) and then got some fake leather 2 yards (12 bucks) some hook needles ($3) and high strenght thread... i am going do stich up the leather to pull snug around the tube, then cut circles out and stich those as well for end caps... from there just pop on some snaps and i will have 2 biker rolls for $27 bucks... i am fiberglassing one just to see if it is nessassary... and i have a ton of extra fiberglass from the last sub enclosure i built for my truck... here are some pics so far... got to watch my cuzins tomorrow so i will finish it up there if the little critters dont drive me up the wall... ya ya ya i know the house is a mess... we are moving dont care...
this proves yet again... if you can buy it... you can build it for less! ooh ya and i am making each one big enought to hold two full size helmets (to give you an idea on size... that should hold all her crap!

You should have some friends over and drink some strawberry daiquiris while you make that thing... you know, call it stitch n' bitch!

Sorry I couldn't resist!

It does look good though... Post up the pics when you're done.

You know I couldn't help but think harder about this...because I am a thinker. What if you were to paint the tube, inside and out to protect it from the elements. Then wrap it with the leather. Then cut out a door in the tube and put a piano hinge on it and buttons to keep it closed. So it would keep it's form and be sort of a hard leather bag. The hinges would be hidden. We can now co-patent the idea.

Did you ever think of using a platic tube, like the white plastic drain tubing?
They have stuff big enough at Home Depot / Lowes etc.

Coatthe tube with spray on glue, stretch the fake leather over it. Then find a end cap to fit over then ends like you already have.

Now you have a hard bag. Make a pleather pillow for it for a back reat.

Very interesting. I might have to try something like this considering I have no storage except for my small fork bag, good idea.

i looked for the drain tubing... actually i took my time and walked down every isle in Lowes and Homedepot... the drain tube they had was PVC and like 35 bucks for a 1ft section... then with the leather, spray glue, and caps that would have been about what it cost to buy a small one... i am building 2 for 27 bucks with these materials... i actualy was thinking about it and i am going to shoot the tubes in bed liner (the cheap rubber stuff) from autozone... that will work perfect to help repell water and again $3.25 cheap cheap cheap... i cut one of the sections of tube for a hatch for a door as described above and have to either Junk it or fiberglass it... it is just way to flimsy without a solid structure... besides i am not going to have to get in it while riding, that is what the saddle bags are for... this i will just pack up and u bolt to my fender mount luggage rack...

Great idea. I've been trying to figure out a way to pack all my camping gear and not look like a hillbilly. Looks like this might be the way. Have a great a trip.

Ride Safe.
