Last weekend we took a ride, few hundred miles. we started out on the highway at about 70 -75 MPH. After a while it was not as enjoyable. I mostly cruise around town, not used to these longer, higher speed trips. Was thinking that one of those detachable windshields would help with the constant preasure in the chest. I ride an '07 dwg. Any ideas or opinoins would help.
Just from personal experience, and living in Minot, North Dakota now (pretty much no hills or mountains to speak of, just flat prairie farm land),with constant winds, and the highway speed limit being 70 (which in turn is75-80, easily, on my bike), I have come to find that the detachable windshield I bought was a savoir. NotONLY for the winds, butALSO for 95% of the bugs in the summer time. I would suggest a mid to high size for you. That all depends on how high you sit up on your bike, and how tall you are though.
Aaaaaaand, it comes off, and goes on in about 3 seconds... Nice for when you just want to cruise around town without it.
I don't like big windsheilds but wanted something to punch a hole in the wind so I could relax on long trips.I also wanted to be able to pop it off in hot weather.I bought the smallest SPORTECH which works fine for me.
i rock a windshild every time i am on the highway... with my apes and as wide as i am i turn into a kite and just catch air...gets tiring to ride! slap on a shield no worries!
Riding with a windshield on my '07 Wide Glide for the first time this season -- last season it was bare bones white knuckle wind pounding on my chest (that was till fun though). I still wish I didn't need it, but there's just no denying the huge increase in ride comfort at high speeds. I haven't taken it off since the first ride with it on.
I got a detachable one mostly to defeat cold wind in the winter. But, now Im starting to like it all the time. It makes the ride a lot more comfortable. Wouldnt think of going on a long ride without it.
As many different style as the're out there. Im sure you could find exaclty what you need.
I used to have a windshield on the King, but now all I have is that little tool pouch. Amazing what that little leather roll will do for wind. For those that don't want a windshield, might want to give it a try. Old old biker trick, so I can't take the credit. Long trips? Blanket up there does wonders.
