I am on the 180 SE Dunlop and as Doug said the performance of the bike has improved over the stock 160. The wear is the key as others have only gotten 5k out of the tire. I am coming up to half its life and still works well. I ride conservative will post results and pics once I measure the wear and need a new one.
your comment on the SE is quite convincing, coz i've never tried on SE before, always the stock dunlops.
i wasnt sure enough when i paid the SE 150/80/16 @ the hd dealer, i was like "oh okay, i'd rather use the dunlop SE than the stock, better than not riding at all" coz i thought they're not much difference in terms of price, i mean why buy the OEM 401 if its only like 20bucks cheaper than the SE.
it's quite surprising that some one said SE beats the metz, i always hear bikers say go with the metz or avons...

Metzeler vs Dunlop??
The Metz ME880/160 I ran after the 1st OEM 160 rear was better, overall.......... I may have actually gotten another 500 miles out of the Metz, but ran it totally bald. It seemed better in the rain, and corners.
The 2nd OEM Dunlop 160 really felt as good as the Metz 160.......... I think it's somewhat subjective. Of course a new tire feels a lot better than the junker you take off.
The Dunlop SE 180 is the trick if you are not changing to wider wheels to be able to run another brand of 180 series tire.
In my opinion, the SE 180 beats the Metzeler ME880/160, hands down.......... Looks better, rides better, and corners better. I don't know how it will wear, yet.
Keep in mind, the Metzeler ME880/160 is only as wide as a Dunlop 150.
doug says the ME880 160 is as wide as the oem dunlop 150, well lucky me then, coz i was thinking of replacing with 160 but then changed my mind, just stayed with 150.
its just that i think the wider the tyre the harder to handle. i guess wider tyres are more sensitive to not so smooth road surface and those "road snakes". Never had experience on tyres wider than 150? care to share guys?

I think the 180 SE is a sticky som bitch.....my bike has never tried to step out when I jump on it and that to me is worth a lot....got the GMR stage II 98 kit....I am at 7300 mi and just getting ready to replace but the way it hooks up I'd be happy with 5000 mi and it has been ok in the rain but then again I keep it pretty mellow on wet roads....I got the replacement thru Zanotti Motor dunno how they compare with the other stores......good discount over the dealer even with shipping.....I'm sticking with this tire for now because I don't want to change wheels....also I may be wrong but I think the total width is just about the same if not wider than going to a 200 Metz on an 18...could be wrong.

Can anyone verify that this is 100% true? I refuse to buy the wide tire kit and my dealer will not install this tire on my bike without the kit. I've got an indy that will do it and I was hoping to try and give him as much of the deal as I can by getting the tire and all through him. I haven't talked to him yet but I was about to start looking online to see if I could at least buy the tire somewhere else besides the dealer. If it does have to be purchased through a dealer, is there anywhere they can be ordered and shipped and still be cheaper than walking into a local dealer store?
By the way, this topic has been discussed many times. Seems to me, based on other threads, the common belief/experience is that the SE 180 will not give you the miles the stocks or other brands will. However, I've also heard it rides and handles very nicely. I don't know or care about rain handling because I try to avoid rain riding if at all possible anyway. The one thing that keeps bringing back to this tire is that it looks sweet with the tread pattern it has and, as far as I know, this is THE only 180 tire that is designed to be mounted up on the stock width rim. Not that anything is necessarily wrong with running some other 180's on the stock rim but I've heard they look kind of strange at certain angles when compared to the SE 180. Considering the other things that I've dropped 200 or more dollars on at the drop of a hat, I don't really mind getting less miles out of this tire. I'll still only need one every year or so.

I love it so far. By the way, my stock back tire only got me 7000 miles.

You may have misunderstood my post. The dealer isn't telling me the tire won't fit, they are saying they won't install it without the kit. The tire is definitely designed for the stock rim which is why I want it over any other choices. The so-called kit is basically just a few bits and pieces to secure the wiring under the fender so that it doesn't get rubbed by the wider tire. However, I have the detachable sideplates with the signal relocation kit which required the wires be cut and spliced back together. It also uses more of the wires so there is less excess under the fender. I have checked everything under my fender and there should be no issues with wire clearance as-is. So, I don't need and refuse to pay extra for this kit. All I should need is the tire, a tube, and a new rim band and someone to install it that won't give me any B.S. about this kit.
I'm at about 6700 miles with my stock rear and it recently passed inspection at over 6000 miles. However, I don't like the looks of the tread that is left and won't take any chances with it. When the weather gets such that I'll be doing a lot of riding vs. the rare, short rides I'm able to take now, I'll be looking into getting the tire replaced.
i put on a dunlop sportmax qualifier. 180-55/17 onto the stock rim and am more than pleased with it. completeley different ride. only been on for about 350 miles so who knows what kind of mileage i'll get out of it but that really has never been much of a concern to me. would rather have a great tire i can trust to do whatever i want out of it than worry i'm not gonna get 5000 miles of it. heres a link.http://www.dunlop-tires.com/dunlop_e...max_qualifier/
2007FXDC...to clarify yes you can just order the SE 180 from Zanotti and then have anyone put it on without buying the wide tire kit....and yes you are right the tire wears fast because it is a soft, grippin, som bitch that rides good too...thats the beauty of it...and I'm like you I could give two ***** if I have to throw a new one on every 5k...
