DYNO TUNING THE NEWER DELPHI SYSTEM ENGINES
I read that using a Power Commander on this type of system is basically a pointless effort as the closed loop Delphi system "readjusts" itself to any modifications in the AFR and sets the bike back to a ratio ofaround 14.5. Now, in my case I previously used a SERT with my bike so the Power Commander is not the tuning device, but I am wondering if the Race Tuner changes are handeled by the system the same way.
Basically...am I going to get an expensive dyno tune on my bike (quoted between $250-$450 locally depending on shop and what they say they will do with the bike) just to have my computer controlled machine readjust itself a few miles down the road back to the HD original specs? YIKES!
BTW, my stage one set-up boils down to a Screamin Eagle air filter, and Vance and Hines Big Radius 2-1 pipes combined with the SERT on my otherwise stock 88 motor.
Thanks for any insight here.
NOPE. The Delphi FI ECM is a self-adjsuting compensator device that does take into consideration, air density, volume, feedback from the O2 sensors, etc. and adjust accordingly for a (I believe) closer to a pre-determined 14.7 mix by the MoCo. Adding a PC or SERT is not pointless, as the ECM is commanded by the PC or SERT settings, and maintains those, in place of the stock settings.
The SERT, as well as the PC are devices which richen the mixture to a degree, for better performance and ridability. They do work. The jury is still out on which one actually works best, but for the most part I have never seen anything bad written about the SERT.
If you already have one, let them dial it in, do your dyno run, and your settings will remain. The ECM will not "readjust" to maintain stock specs with the SERT or a PC dialed in to a correct map for your bike/set-up.
If you really want intimate details, PM Trotter on this forum. He is an experienced HD tuner with a lot of info to offer. Perhaps, he'll read this link and respond.
The only thing I see of any question is the cost for your dyno runs. Typically, (especially in cases where the SERT is used) a tuner will dial in your settings, then tell you to ride the bike for a few days, come back, and then they'll dial it in to a gnat's behind at that time. Around here, that usually means a minimal charge for the first dyno run, then maybe $150 for the second and final. You may want to check around to other shops for cheaper dyno time.
Good luck, you'll be psyched with your end results!!
