Is there much difference between standard & hd progressive shocks,I put on 11 1/2 standards on my 2001 FXDP,fine for me,160lb but bottoms on belt guard & on tire when 2 up combined weight of 350.
Your standards are adjustable so you ought to be able to crank up the preload - Progressive supplies the wrench in the box when you buy their shocks.
To answer your question, I expect there is a big, noticeable difference though never having had the standards I'm not able to quantify it. The HDs are very FIRM - you feel every bump and can get airborne if not careful on potholes - LOL! But boy is the handling something else - they really hug the twisties. I love 'em and I'm 185 lbs which is well below Progressive's suggested weight for HDs.
Well, I'd say you're pushing the limits quite a bit then since Progressive recommends the HDs for two-up and anything over 240 lbs. I never ride two-up it seems, but got the 11" HDs just in case I ever choose to, and for the firmer/lower ride w/o having any clearance issues - didn't want to have to buy 'em twice if ya get my meaning. But looks like maybe you should, unfortunately. Probably a good market here on the forum if you decide to sell your standard duties so shouldn't hurt ya too bad.
I ride two-up all the time (combined weight= 300lbs) and haven't had any problems with the standard duties. They are 11" and I crank up the pre-poad when two-up.
