Not to pile on, but you learned a very hard lesson: BUZZED = DRUNK. Period. If someone is buzzed, they're not capable of operating a car, let alone a bike you have to control in 3 dimensions.
I'm sorry skiahh, butSTRONGLY disagree with you there buddy.Buzzed DOES NOT equal drunk. Are you going to tell me that every rider on this board you has had a couple of drinks while out riding who may have a little buzz going on is riding drunk? That everyone who ever leaves a restaurant after having a few drinks drives home drunk? I'll admit I like to have a couple beers when I go out riding with the guys. And when I do have these beers I oftenget a little buzz...but this means I'm drunk? No...I'm sorry man...buzzed is not drunk. Like many pleasurable things in life, you've got to do them in moderation. Too much of anything is often not good. If you've been riding for awhile then you know how many times you run into buzzed/drunk (whatever you want to call it) friends or just people in general while your out riding. Have you taken all of these guys keys away from them everytime? If so, then your a better man than me.

Sorry to hear about that. I have a strict "take the keys" policy. If someone I know is with someone that's beyond responsible I have intervened to the point of taking the keys. They are not only a danger to themselves, but other. I've taken a few punches in the face for potentially saving a few lives.

Thanks for sharing Ian. I'm glad to hear your friend Jessica is going to be ok. I hope that her male friends heals as well. Hard lesson learned for her, but you should hold no guilt. She is obviously an adult and made her own decision to get back on his bike. Hopefully she has learned a lesson.

I can not preach being guilty of worse than drunk driving at times in the past, but in Southern California where I live, anything that alters your reaction time can mean serious danger. The fact is no one else watches where the hell they are going, and most of the time you have to react for them. You need good judgment, and even better reaction time. If your riding on open road, away from traffic, maby not so critical. I guess its easy for me to say since it will be three years on Wednesday since I picked up a drink or drug. I am + 1 for the prayers, and hope they both recover 100%.

Not claiming to better than anyone. But to me, buzzed means feeling the effects of alcohol and by then you are, at least in driving terms, drunk. In fact, well before you feel buzzed, your body is already impacted negatively by the alcohol. Negatively in terms of precision control and decision making, anyway, such that you should not be operating a car. Motorcycles take - if I remeber my MSF course correctly - about 4 times more coordination to operate than a car so even a couple of beers could very likely impact your ability to safely operate a bike.

If I remember right, RI is a .08 state (just transferred from there and know the exact bar you're referring to since I used to ride the East Bay Bike Path). That's as little as 4 beers in 2 hours for a 200#er.

Like I said, not claiming to be better than anyone, but if I was riding with you and you had "a couple" of beers, I wouldn't ride close to you after that. But that's just me. Others would call me names for an attitude like that, but so be it.

An example of a young person who feels indestructible.

Those "crotch rockets" are uncomfortable to ride. Your knees are always bent, back crunched over and hard seat.

My 2 cents,

You did more than your part. They were two adults, not kids.

Just another reason why Idon't drink alcohol when I ride. Not one drop.
+1 and hope they recover fully!

Feeling guilty is normal so I won't tell you not to 'feel' that way. Take comfort you guys did everything a responsible person should have to do. They are adults and therefore take the ultimate responsibility. Telling your friend to find an alternative ride was best thing you guys did.
