Man it's been a bad weekend. We lost three HOG members this weekend. One of them was a young mother, 30 years old. She was the neighbor of another HOG member and before the woman and her husband left on their bikes, the neighbor told them to be careful as they had been out all day and were tired and had been partying. The neighbor went back inside, heard the bikes go down the street one way, then turn around and hauled *** the other way. She said she then heard the sickening sound of squealing tires and four thuds. They had been hotdogging and the woman clipped the guys bike. He was thrown off his bike onto the side of the road. She was thrown under an oncoming car. She was killed immediately. The neighbor ran down the street to see what she could do. She felt for a pulse as she was laying under the car but she was already gone. She leaves two children behind.
Please, please, please, for God's sake, be careful!!!!!! Respect the machine underneath you. Live to ride another day.
Not to pile on, but you learned a very hard lesson: BUZZED = DRUNK. Period. If someone is buzzed, they're not capable of operating a car, let alone a bike you have to control in 3 dimensions.
I'm sorry skiahh, butSTRONGLY disagree with you there buddy.Buzzed DOES NOT equal drunk. Are you going to tell me that every rider on this board you has had a couple of drinks while out riding who may have a little buzz going on is riding drunk? That everyone who ever leaves a restaurant after having a few drinks drives home drunk? I'll admit I like to have a couple beers when I go out riding with the guys. And when I do have these beers I oftenget a little buzz...but this means I'm drunk? No...I'm sorry man...buzzed is not drunk. Like many pleasurable things in life, you've got to do them in moderation. Too much of anything is often not good. If you've been riding for awhile then you know how many times you run into buzzed/drunk (whatever you want to call it) friends or just people in general while your out riding. Have you taken all of these guys keys away from them everytime? If so, then your a better man than me.
Not wanting to get into an argument, but I'd be willing to bet when you feel that "buzz" your probably over the "legal" limit. I do understand what your saying, I feel the same way, but I know when I feel like that, I'm taking a chance. I wont say "drunk", as that means different things to different people.
Bottom line - I think you did enough that night. They are grown-azz people and will make their own decisions. She could have very easily said no that night.
Dam, Thanks for sharing.
I can understand how you feel about not doing more, but as others have said, they are grown adults, he made the decision to put the first drink down, no one forced him and then so on. So it was his decision, not yours. So many times in this world everyone wants to look for someone else to blame, but it should always go to the one who actually drank, not the other people standing around.
Happy to hear she is out of the hosbital, tough lesson to learn.
Hey FXDC Rider, I know exactly how you and your wife feel
I went through the same thing with a fellow rider last year on August 19th at precisely 5: 10PM on our way out of Boston from the Baseball Tavern- about 7 of us...Greg had had too much to drink. We could kinda tell by the way he was talking. Can't tell a grown man what to do, though.
He got on his bike and we rode down Newbury and onto the causeway beside 93 south....stopped and got gas at the Mobil....We took off...accelerating....and he blows past me doing about 60MPH and accelerating fast.
He was about a telephone pole and a half length away when he drove directly into the curb under the Mass Ave overpass... It just looked like he'd exploded...when I came up onto the wreckage, all that was left was a frame, rear wheel, and front wheel......tank and handlebars were gone....and so was Greg.... He'd shot off the bike about 25 yards away in a grassy knoll area....we walked over to him and we knew he was gone
took some nerve driving home that day
Family had us lead in the funeral procession....and that ended the riding season for me....i started my winter mods
Suffice to say, it's very sobering.....very unfortunate, but a sobering reminder that you should NOT get hammered and drive ANYTHING....let alone a motorcycle...let alone with someone on the back- as in your friend's case
But I know that feeling in the belly...It stuck with me for a few weeks ....i still have the 3 text messages on my cell phone that i sent to my brother in law who'd ridden on ahead of us while we stopped for gas...."Accident"....."Bad!"....."Coming home"
Sorry to hijack your post....but I thought some empathy was due
All my prayers are with you and your friends. I have also been stupid and rode under the influence and dont remember getting home. That was before court orderedrehab and now I have been clean for 20+(nothing worse than an ex -addict). I ride to the local bars up north with my buds and I have a coffee and dont judge them. I hate to see young kids on those rocket bikes with the rider in full body armour and the girl without. I am going to stop here but my prayers wont......The best to you.......
sorry to hear about the crash. but to me it's like this if you want to drink stay home if you want to ride then ride . but the two does not mix and i dont give a hoot what people think.i will take the ride over a drink any time,i did know a couple of friends that like to drink more than ride.now there not here. and it's not what they did it was what some body else but due to there condtion they made the wrong call.

jsbridgew,
I remember sending you a pm about this story when it happened last year...just terrible. I know there's only so much you can do or say to someone in a situation like this, but it does come down to them being grown men & mature adults who need to take responsibility for their own actions. Unfortunately some of these people don't have a lick of common sense in addition to immaturity. These things mixed with alcohol & motorcycles never mix too well. Nice to hear from ya again! Ride safe!
