Default Friend needs help removing shifter

My buddy has a 03 lowrider with stock mid-controls. He is the 2nd owner and bought the bike from a friend who customized it quite highly when he owned it and it has been well maintained and is just over 10k miles. He wants to remove the shifter so he can adjust the position. But, he can't get it to budge after removing thepinch/retention bolt and trying to pry it open. He can't see that it's really rusted at all or any other obvious reason it doesn't seem to want to move. He isn't comfortable, as I wouldn't be, really banging on it to get it off. Would heat help? Anyone have any ideas for some sort of pulling tool that would fit it properly enough to get it off the spline? Any ideas at all?

Can you get a C-Clamp on it with the static foot on the backside of the shifter and the other foot on the spline? If the foot is small enough you may be able to get it to break loose by alternating the pull angle. Or try the old WD-40 and a side project time killer. Good luck.

normal trick is to place a screw drive in the end of the slot, depending onthe screw driver you can go from under neath and 90 dergrees to the shaft but most need to go in form the side at 90 degrees to the lever, then tap it in with a hammer to spread the clamp open. Then pull and push on the toe end of the lever to work it loose. The shaft the gear lever is on doesnt go intot he gear box itself so your not going to hurt anything by taping the screw driver in to the slot. Just be carefull to use a smooth side one so it doesnt pick up on the chrome.

Thanks for the suggestions. He has already done the WD-40 soaking and then wait and he has tried using a screw driver to pry it open but, if I know him, he probably hasn't tried actually putting a hammer to anything.

If anyone has any other suggestions as well, I'll relay them to him.

Thanks

small wheel puller like one for lawn mower repair will not put extensive pressure on shaft and wont scratch the primary
