Default Shift Lever Replacement Woes

Hi,
I'm replacing my gear shift lever and shaft due to the teeth on the shaft and lever being chewed up. The
lever comes without the rubber covered toe part - I'd like to use my existing toe part and rubber boot.
I'm having difficulty removing the rubber covered toe part. Does anyone have ideas about removing the
rubber covered toe part from the shift lever? The rubber covered toe part appears to screw into the shift
lever, but, I haven't been able to get the rubber off the toe part without destroying it - I figured once I got
the rubber boot off, it would be easier to remove the metal part the rubber covers. It seems like this
should be a simple fix....
For what it's worth, the bike is a '01 FLH.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Ride safe and have fun!
Bob

To get the rubber boot off try to pry it up a little and use the little red straw that comes with every can of WD-40 to get some lube under it. Had to do this to get the boot off my rear brake pedal when I changed it. Just remember to clean it out good afterwards. Not sure it the boot will be the same diameter as the replacement toe shifter though. Sounds like the toe shifter itself is corroded in place, since you have your trusty can of WD handy, shoot a little on the front and back side of the peg and let it work for a while. Some people say heating it up will help break it free also.

TIP: Whenever I install something that is not in a high heat area and doesn't routinely come off (like a shifter), after everything is cleaned up good and the loc-tite is applied. I put a small bead of clear bathroom silicone at the base of the head. It won't mix with the loc-tite and it helps keep water from rain and washing from working into the threads. It breaks free easily when you need to remove the bolt and doesn't affect torque values.

Hi,
I think my original reply never went out - sorry about that.
At any rate, I just wanted to make sure you knew how I appreciated
your suggestions. Worked out great! WD 40 did the trick. My wife
had suggested soapy water which didn't quite work out, but, along with
your help, got me closer to a fix. Again, many thanks!
Ride safe and have fun,
Bob
