a couple of questions,what size is the nut on the forks and are they a left hand thread or a right hand,its on a fxdl lowrider

It is 1 1/3inches or 35mm. There is a shallow socket that is designed specifically for this job. Search on ebay or google it Harley Davidsonfirk cap socket. And they are normal right hand threads.

That special socket is a real gem. It will save the cap nut from any slipsfrom a tool, also cover all painted surfaces from tools that might fall.

Yep, and the socket will clear the handle bars. The one I used ended being a little tall and now I have very slight scratches on the bars where it rubbed while I was torquing the cap.
