Tire change question...
I just got done doing my first ever Harley tire change. I replaced the stock rear with another Dunlop at about 8K, standard stuff from what I gather reading around here. Anyway, to the question. Getting the tire off the rim was a friggin' b*tch. Fortunately, a buddy stopped by and between the two of us and a couple tire irons we got the darn thing off. It almost seemed that there was some kind of glue on the bead. After we got it off, he left and I got my new one mounted using an old trick from my dirt-bike days; soapy water. New tire practically jumped on all by itself (well, except for the last 12 inches or so of the back side..)
All aligned belt tension checked, showered an back in the house, I get to second guessing myself. Is it possible that there was some bead sealant/glue/stuff on the bead of the original factory tire? Am I screwed for not putting some of this mystery goop on when I put on the replacement tire? After all, this isn't my 250 Elsinore.... Am I inviting trouble by just trusting the soapy water will disipate and there will be a "stong enough" seal on the bead with the friction between the rubber and the rim? Will getting this replacement tire off be just as hard or is this just like cracking that beige lock-tite they use at the factory?
Any advise is appreciated. Sorry if these are newbie questions, they are. I just cant see paying anyone to touch my bike, in their shop, with me not knowing at least HOW to do it if it is something I can do myself. Down the road, if I choose not to wrestle tires and pay someone, at least I know what I'm paying them for
