Default Exhaust Stud Removal

Several months back I had a problem when putting my exhaust back on. The engine was warm the nut for my exhaust got a little cross threaded. When I went to tighten it down the stud turned into the head. There was just enough to hold the pipes on so I ran it that way. Yesterday I decided its time to fix it. Simple half turn on the nut and it came off. Then I had to get the stud out.

First I tried the good old vise grips. The stud was in too tight and the wrong location for this to work. It was the rear cylinder top stud. So next I fired up the engine and got her good and hot, only thing this did was burn my fingers, no luck budging the stud. I tried one of these http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...d=stud+removerbut not enough room.

I tried to drive a socket on the end and turn it out, no good.

I finally went down to sears and bought a stud remover small enough to work, drove it on the stud and she came out like butter.

If you ever need to remove a stud, try these they work pretty well. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...rd=nut+remover

I had to do the same thing. The trick is to run the engine first and let it idle and get hot. Once the metal heats up and expands it's a lot easier to back out the stud using pliers or vice grips.

My Dad had suggested before installing the exhaust stud, that I should cut an "X" into the end of the stud not going into the engine. Then I could use a phillips head screwdriver to remove.
