Default Removing shock bottom bolt....

I've got some Boss saddlebags ordered and should be delivered any day now. Part of the mounting hardware that's included are these roller bearingsthatwill bemounted on the bottom of the rear shocks with the existing hardware that mounts the shock. In order to do this, the bolt has to be removed along with the existing washer and the washer is replaced by the roller bearing. According to the HD manual I should be able to remove the shock bolt without lifting the bike if one shock is done at a time. I thought I remember somebody saying that they have done it this way but I can't find anything on it. Have any of you done it this way and if so how much of a pain in the **** was it? It seems to me that there will be alot of force on the bolt and when you pull it out that the shock is going to want to shoot past the hole where the bolt has got to go back in to. I think I might be talking myself in to buying a lift, but it depends on what experience you all have in doing this. You're help would be appreciated!!!

Buy a lift. I tried the way the service manual said, one at a time... um... well it did NOT work...
Here is the thread >> http://www.HDForums.com/m_3258595/tm.htm

I borrowed a lift to finish, but Harbor Freight has one on sale this month so I m going to snag it.

It is possible to do one at a time, but as subculture said( well to paraphrase)it isn't all 'peaches and cream'.
A lift is just a good investment, like a good torque wrench and manual.

PS

The car jack (in my other post) saved my *** to get it back on. But I do not recommend it - I did it only because I needed to ride the bike to work the next day.

agree with the others - can be done without a lift -but why?
spend a few bucks on the lift and it's super easy - you'll use the lift again for sure.

If you really don't want to buy the lift - just make sure you have someone help you out - much easier with 2 people - very difficult by yourself.

Thanks for the input....deep down I did think the lift was the way to go, but after reading what the manual had to say I just had to find out if anybody tried it that way and see what they thought.

Looks like I'm heading out to buy a lift and torque wrench!!!

I switched out my shocks without a lift and by myself. I found the right side to be easier than the left side. It's really not that hard to do by yourself (just requires a quick short moment of heavy lifting). It really sounds worse than it is.

I put Boss Bags on without a lift. I also replaced shocks without a lift. Both times I had help from a friend lifting the bike.
