Fluid change intervals
Quick question that I hope I can get some help on. I have an '08 Street Bob that I bought in October, but I haven't been able to ride it as often as I would like to. Works hectic, wife decided to get pregnant, and it's been really wet around here. Anyways, I see the first service interval is 1K, and that's a very important service to do, but I am nowhere near that mileage, and the bike is 7 months old. The owners manual says nothing about time intervals, just mileage. At what point should I worry about changing the primary/crankcase/trans fluids? Should I still stick to the 1K interval?
Misfit,
I would change it if it is that old and has been setting, but I am not sure if the break in has been completed. Good question, because if you do change it, and it is not done wearing in, then will you have to change it again in another 1k or less? My understanding on the 1k service is that it is needed to rid the fluids of metal particulate, not because the oil has deteriorated. I did mine at the dealership because I figured it was a good chance for them to ID any warranty issues. Also, if you are thinking about forward controls, the time to do them is at that service, since you have to drain the primary anyway. You can save some on labor (either paid or your own) by combining the two jobs. Try posting in the Do It Yourself Help Forum>Oil and Oil Related at https://www.hdforums.com/forumid_222/tt.htm
You may have more luck there, and can definitely get some good info on intervals. Good luck, and congratulations on the new kid.
