My 02 FXDWG has 11700 miles and just wrapped up my 10 k service a little late but there's more to the story. I bought the bike in March with 7k miles and went thru quite a learning curve with "bikes with low milage", there was a fish swimming motion at speeds over 70, loose spokes and tripple tree, dealer fixed but I felt the bike should not have gone to the showroom floor like that. There was the loose battery cable that led to the stator replacement and a new battery on the 3rd day of riding on the battery alone. There was the oil dip stick that would not pull out (frozen inplace over time) solution, new dip stick and a dealer covered oil change. Both Tires replacement and then the bike would pull very hard to right when I let go of handle bars. Dealer said he realigned the rear tire in the 10k service, which I could see there was a 1/8th or better difference in the gap on the frame at the rear axle adjustment slots in the frame. There was the sound like BB's in a tin cup being swirlled around and around at highway speeds and running temps that my dealer says in the correct sound for the lifters in the 88 twin. Anyway back to the brakes, like I said earlier the dealer said nothing about pads after the 10k service (480.00 at Harley Haven in COLUMBIA,SC, seems high after all the other stuff they did) but with the other details I'm uncertain of the quality of the inspection. Looking at the pads there appears to be about an 1/8 of pad on both front and rear,
QUESTION SHOULD I GO AHEAD AND CHANGE THESE MYSELF AND STOP SUPPORTING THIS GUYS VACATIONS IN HAWAII?
Pads are easy to replace. If you don't have the service manual, the instructions come with the Harley pads. Get a manual though and you won't be sorry. Do a search for best pads and you'll see Lyndall Z or Gold are the preferred pads. I have a new set of noisey harley pads on the front, but then heard about lyndalls on this forum and and put a pair on the back. Got them for $55.00 shipped. Much better stopping than what was on there before. I guess the short answer is yes, you should stop sending these guys away to exotic locations for work that you can perform easily yourself. But dealers and Indys' will always have a place when you get in over your head. Plus this forum can make you much more confident with the wealth of tech related threads and the chance to learn from the misfortunes of others. That sounds bad in a way, but many honest folks here not afraid to man-up when it comes to sharing mistakes they've made while wrenching in the hopes others may be spared a similar fate. Before asking though, use the search function at the top.
Sounds like it was rode hard and put away wet before u got it. IF u bought it from a dealer does he know the history? Sounds like it might have been wrecked. I don't know how to look up history, Do they have bike-fax?? Matybe someone knows. Good luck..
