Default Redlining engine

Does anyone here occasionally run their evos to redline before shifting?&nbsp\\; I'm looking at a bike that has occasionally been driven like that &amp\\; I was wondering if that might have damaged it.&nbsp\\; I've ridden it several times &amp\\; the engine sounds fine.

&nbsp\\;
&nbsp\\;This engine was redlined on purpose? I can't imagine what else has been done to the bike, in an abusive way. Only the current owner would know and now he wants to sell this bike/engine

I think there is a rev limiter which would stop it before damage occurs.

If it has the factory ignition with the factory redline (limiter), it shouldn't have hurt the motor.&nbsp\\; However, if the former owner installed an after market ignition, and raised the factory redline, a lot depends on what else they did to the motor to strengthen it, and how far up they moved the limiter.
&nbsp\\;
Harley's are all "stroker" motor's, and are not designed to be high rpm motors.&nbsp\\; Winding any of them to 7,000 or 8,000 regularly will impair their life span.&nbsp\\; Below that, it depends on the model of the motor and how it has been modified.

As previous posters have said - if its a stock config or has a stage 1 then you should be fine.&nbsp\\; If its a newer bike then the&nbsp\\;ECU should limit the revs before you do any damage.&nbsp\\; You can rev it up to red line periodically without worrying - just so long as it hasn't been run it in in the red zone for any period of time.

Thank you all for taking the time to post your opinions. The bike is bone-stock other than screaming eagle slip on mufflers.&nbsp\\;It's a '94 Dyna FXDS Convertible.&nbsp\\; Engine runs really well and is mechanically very quiet.&nbsp\\; He only ran it up to the beginning of the red zone occasionally.&nbsp\\; Never into the red or for any length of time at the beginning of the red.

That's why they have rev limiters. Sportsters don't, they just valve float.

first of all its not going to hurt the motor torev the engine it does have a rev limiter for that very purpose . second to address the b.s. about sportsters yes they also have a rev limiter the same as everything else unless I got the super top secret test model.

&nbsp\\;
Not that it makes any difference, but Sportsters do6000 rpm for 2004 and later, a little lower for the earlier models.&nbsp\\; However, with a little valve train enhancement, the redline can be increased to 7000 or so without damaging the motorand it can be run there regularly.&nbsp\\; Much above that starts loosening the motor a bitlike pieces here and there
&nbsp\\;
The X moter is just made to run a little harder, but the trade off is relatively less torque at the lower end.&nbsp\\;
