I recently bought a fork bag and intended to mount it above the headlights of my Fat Bob. \\; But a friend just said he thought the leather rubbing on the top of the headlights, the forks and the triple tree would cause damage. \\; Any body have any experience with this?
Yes
 \\;
I had mine mounted above the headlight on my SG. It messed up the paint on the headlight and was leaving marks on the chrome of the triple tree.
 \\;
After seeing a post on here from someone that hard mounted theirs I did the same thing. I made a brace and mounted it to the headlight bolt.
 \\;
It works great and is alot more secure than using the straps and now it doesnt rub on the bike anywhere.
I mounted mine on the frame in front of the motor mount to prevent such damage. \\;\\\\\\; Here is a pic if suggestions are welcomed.

Here are some pics of what I did.

You could also search Fork bag damage for the thread of the guy I got the idea from.

He used a door hinge for his. I took a T brace and bent the one end down in a vise. I cut a small hole in the back to slide it through then bolted it to the bag with 2 bolts. Then had to drill out a hole so the headlight bolt would fit through the brace. Its nice and sturdy but was flexible enough for me to slightly bend it some to keep the edges from rubbing.

 \\;\\\\\\; Looks like a possum pusher.
 \\;
LOL, I have zero possum *** smeared on my bag.
Bags, seats, and jackets rubbing on paint will scuff it up a bit. Such is life, not much you can do about it. When I made my saddle bags I used a soft fabric on the bottom side but never really checked to see what it looks like now.
the triple tree is not chrome, its aluminum and is easily damaged. \\; i learned the hard way. \\; then i did what jmpancoast did and relocated to below the voltage regulator...

Yep, mines down low by the regulator \\;as well.
I originally mounted it between my sissy bar and my tail light and it started scuffing the fender.
