I've been trying to figure out what kind of air cleaner I want to go with on my FXDB, and I think I prefer the look of a side-facing velocity stack over your basic round A/C look...they show off more of the engine than a round or football A/C, or a forward facing stack like a Forcewinder. But I know they're generally minimally filtered with a wire screen or not at all. I've seen some made by Wimmer that have better filters but not much talk of them around the forum. Are these pretty much for looks as well or do they filter on par with the SE or Heavy Breather kits?
As with pretty much any velocity stack...you're getting a straight blast of air. Most performance shops don't like em because it doesn't cause any turbulence whatsoever with the air being swallowed in. They prefer to have something create a bit of swirling effect to build HP. I'm a bit of a performance nut, but I opted to run a velocity stack anyway. The deal is, if you're looking for strictly fancy numbers from a dyna print out, then stay away from a velocity stack because you're gonna lose a coupla HP. But, in the real world...I ain't gonna notice a loss of a coupla HP. Yeah, I do love performance...but the velocity stack does look BAD ***!!! LOL!!!
D
Yeah, velocity stacks look cool. But if there is a decent filter on it, it will be restrictive (just not big enough) and you will want to maintain it to keep it as clean as possible. Note that race engines (that are not constantly pulled apart for inspection) use great big air filters where possible.
A velocity stack for low/midrange power would be a fairly long unit. Short ones are most effective at high RPMs.
Saint! I'm loving the Thunderheaders on your bike!!....I think those are what I'll go with when I upgrade my pipes. How're you liking em, especially wrapped?
