Back firing and popping

A friend of mine who has and evo police bike an older 80"s model is having trouble with his bike backfiring and popping. He has put 2 new regulators and a stator plus new terminal ends to his regulator. I can't talk him in to taking it to a HD dealer because he say"s he doesn't have the money, but he has spent enough money on it to shadetreers now to have it fixed. Does anyone have an idea to why his bike is doing this? I know what his problem is (Hardheaded).

Start with the basics. Look at the carburator (clean or rebuild) or it could be as simple as an intake side leak. Make sure the timing is correct.
