My trans was super quiet, but when I took the bike in for a weird vibration, they replaced the gearset for some odd reason (vibes still there) and now it whines real bad in 1st. Has bel-ray gear oil in it, too.

Same here in 1st gear. Totally normal. I do not hear it in 5th but the Thunderheader washes just about any noise out at speed.

Havn't noticed any whining on the bike but for some reason my wife is doing it more than usual lately. Maybe she needs her fluids checked...
So THAT's what that noise is! Mine makes screeching noises so I better check it soon... Seriously, my tranny whines ever so slightly when I back off on the throttle in all gears, and it's only for a couple of seconds. Been doing it since I've had the bike and no ill effects so I have considered it normal.

Dude, my 07 rattles and whines more than any harley I've had so far (this is my third). I'm slowly but surely eliminating most of the causes (loose fender bolts, improperly installed backrest from the dealer, etc.etc.) The transmission noise is there in 1st and 5th but I'm not worrying about that since I know the cause. Baker has a fix for it if you want to spend the dough.

Well that can happen if you haven't checked her fluids with your dipstick...

Some make no whine and some scream. The norm however is most will make noise in first and fifth due to these being spur cut. The rest are helical and usually silent. Try 75/140 gear oil to quiet it down some.

+1 I am using Redline SHockproof Heavy gear oil...75w250 which will quiet it down some
